When should I start planning my travel vaccines?

Some vaccines need more than one dose, or take a couple of weeks to give full protection. If you can, talk to us 6 to 8 weeks before you leave. Leaving it late? Come in anyway. Some protection is better than none, and we can tell you what’s still possible.

Which travel vaccines do you offer?

Depending on your destination and health, you may need protection against:

  • hepatitis A and hepatitis B
  • typhoid
  • cholera
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • polio
  • measles, mumps and rubella (if you’re not fully vaccinated)
  • flu, and whooping cough boosters

Most travel vaccines aren’t covered by the National Immunisation Program, so a private fee usually applies. You’ll see current prices when you book online. Our pharmacists vaccinate people aged 5 and over. See the full list of vaccines we offer.

When will I need a GP or travel clinic?

Some destinations call for vaccines or medicines that need a prescription or a specialist travel consultation, such as yellow fever vaccination, rabies protection, or medicines to prevent malaria. If that’s the case, we’ll refer you to a GP at Help Medical, an independent general practice located inside our store, or to a travel medicine clinic.

What should go in a travel health kit?

We can help you put together a kit for your trip. Typical items include:

  • plasters, blister pads, antiseptic and a small bandage
  • pain and fever relief
  • oral rehydration solution for traveller’s diarrhoea
  • insect repellent suitable for the region you’re visiting
  • SPF 50+ sunscreen and after-sun gel
  • travel sickness remedies (ask us which suit you)
  • hand sanitiser

Always read the label and follow the directions for use.

How do I travel with my regular medicines?

  • Pack enough for the whole trip plus a few extra days, in your carry-on luggage, in the original packaging.
  • Carry a copy of your prescriptions and a letter from your doctor for any controlled or injectable medicines.
  • Check the rules of the country you’re visiting, as some medicines that are legal in Australia are restricted overseas.
  • If you’re taking PBS medicines overseas, there are limits on how much you can take. Ask us before you go.

Common questions

Do I need to book for travel vaccines?

No. You can walk in, but booking online helps us set aside enough time, as travel consultations can take 20 to 30 minutes. Book a time that suits you.

How much do travel vaccines cost?

Most travel vaccines aren’t covered by the National Immunisation Program, so a private fee usually applies. You’ll see current prices when you book online, or call us and ask.

Can you vaccinate children before travel?

Our pharmacists vaccinate people aged 5 and over. For younger children, the GPs at Help Medical, inside our store, can help.

Do you give the yellow fever vaccine?

No. Yellow fever vaccination needs an approved travel clinic. Ask us and we’ll point you in the right direction if your destination requires it.

Can I get malaria tablets from the pharmacy?

Medicines to prevent malaria need a prescription. The GPs at Help Medical, inside our store, can assess your trip and prescribe if appropriate, and we can dispense the script on the spot.

Where can I check health advice for my destination?

Smartraveller has up-to-date destination advice from the Australian Government, and our pharmacists can talk through what it means for you.
