Who is eligible for a free flu shot?

Under the National Immunisation Program (NIP), the flu vaccine is free for people with a Medicare card who are:

  • aged 65 and over
  • pregnant, at any stage of pregnancy
  • children aged 6 months to under 5 (we can vaccinate from age 5; younger children can see the GPs at Help Medical)
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over
  • people aged 6 months and over with certain medical conditions, such as heart, lung or kidney disease, diabetes or a weakened immune system

We don’t charge a service fee for NIP vaccines. Queensland’s free flu vaccine program for all residents has finished for 2026. It usually runs through autumn and winter, so check with us early next flu season. If you’re not sure whether you qualify under the national program, ask us and we’ll check.

How much does it cost if I’m not eligible?

If you’re not covered by the NIP, a private fee applies. You’ll see the current price when you book online, or ask us at the counter.

When should I get my flu shot?

Flu season in Australia usually runs through winter, so most people get their vaccine in autumn, before it starts. Protection takes about two weeks to develop. If you’ve missed the start of the season, it’s still worth getting vaccinated, as flu can circulate for months.

Why do I need a flu shot every year?

The vaccine is updated each year to match the strains expected to circulate, and the protection it gives fades over time. A new dose each year keeps your protection up to date for that season. healthdirect has more on how the vaccine works.

Do I need to book?

No. Walk in any day we’re open and scan the QR code at the counter to join the queue, or book a time online. We’ll ask a few quick questions about your health and allergies, give the vaccine in our private consultation area, and ask you to stay in store for 15 minutes afterwards. Allow about 20 minutes in total.

Bring your Medicare card if you have one. Your vaccination is recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register.

Can I have the flu shot with other vaccines?

Usually, yes. The flu vaccine can be given at the same visit as other vaccines, including COVID-19, shingles and pneumococcal vaccines, if they’re due. Your pharmacist will check what’s suitable for you. See the full list of vaccines we offer.

What are the side effects?

A sore arm, tiredness, a headache or a mild temperature for a day or two are common and pass on their own. Serious reactions are rare, which is why we ask you to wait in store for 15 minutes. If you’re worried about any reaction after leaving, contact your GP. In an emergency, call 000.

Common questions

Do I need to book a flu shot?

No. Walk in any day we’re open and scan the QR code at the counter to join the queue, or book a time online if you’d rather not wait.

Can children get a flu shot here?

Our pharmacists vaccinate children aged 5 and over. Children under 5 can see the GPs at Help Medical, inside our store, where the vaccine is free for them under the National Immunisation Program.

Can I get a flu shot if I’m pregnant?

Yes. The flu vaccine is recommended at any stage of pregnancy and is free under the National Immunisation Program. It helps protect you and your baby in the first months of life. Walk in, or book a time online.

Can the flu vaccine give me the flu?

No. The flu vaccines we give are inactivated, so they can’t cause influenza. Some people have a sore arm or feel tired for a day or two, which is the immune system responding.

How long does the flu vaccine take to work?

Protection usually develops within about two weeks of the vaccination, which is why it’s worth getting it before flu season rather than during it. Walk in any day we’re open.

What if I have a cold on the day?

A mild cold usually isn’t a problem. If you have a fever, wait until you’re well. Not sure? Call us and ask.
